COVID-19 Task Force Looks at Testing Blood Oxygen Levels Through Smart Phones 

With the help of technology available on various smart devices, Sprint COVID-19 targets to measure users’ blood oxygen level, which is a critical first step in detecting virus infection. 

Sprint COVID-19 Task Force is the brainchild of the Innovation Department at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod, Israel. In fact, it is a collaborative effort by Assuta Hospital, Rafael Advanced Technology, and Weizmann Institute of Science that has resulted in Sprint COVID-19 Task Force. The initiative was launched to look at advanced technological solutions to conquer COVID-19’s progress. One of the projects looks at testing blood oxygen levels through smart devices with an aim to prevent virus spread through widespread testing for early virus indication.

The group is aggressively working towards developing a heuristic test to carry out on smartphones and smartwatches that can help to identify asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic, and mild cases which could otherwise go undetected and might cause a serious spread by the time it gets detected later on.

To provide this solution, Sprint COVID-19 required to understand if it was feasible for a large segment of the population to check their own oxygen blood levels daily and independently in a most simplistic manner using their smartphones or smartwatches. Interestingly, through the use of technology and data, this became possible.

Lenchner says, “In Israel alone, 13% of mobile users that own a Samsung model are able to test oxygen levels in their blood. We also gathered information across the globe and found that up to 17% of the global smartphone owners own devices that carry the Sp02 sensor, which can enable the test as well, covering nearly 19% of the US smartphone owners, 18% of the UK smartphone owners and up to 12% of Italy’s. These are outstanding numbers and I hope they help in stopping the COVID-19 pandemic’s progress.”

The COVID-19 task force will make the list of devices available soon as all Sprint COVID-19 projects are open source.
